Memorial weekend kicks off summer. What better way to invoke a summer vibe than a poolside luau? Landen’s class had a luau party for their last day of school, and Seiler suggested we do the same. At the dollar store we found grass skirts, leis, tiki cups, and decorations with metallic ribbons that sparkle in the breeze. Memorial Day was warm and relaxing under the patio umbrella. Kids splashed around in the pool. Both Rays took a turn flying a kite. The early dinner menu included fried turkey, potato salad, corn on the cob and juicy watermelon. Aloha!

Turtle Pond
Next door we recycled an old spa shell by turning it into a turtle pond. I did most of the initial digging, and am quite pleased with the results. Now there is a 3’ gated fence around the area that encloses a nice bush and sandy area. The fence perimeter is secured with cement to prevent underground escape. Two pet turtles and one recently found turtle have been released in the sandy area, all of whom prefer to stay submerged in the water. They do climb out on the perfectly fitted plank for sun bathing, but immediately jump back in when any mammals step out of the house.
June 11 ~ Update on the turtle pond: Originally 2 red ear slidders where bought real tiny and lived in 3 increasingly larger aquariums for a few years. Sheeka Honkey, and the recently re-named Franky, seem content in their ginormous space. The found turtle was added when the pond was new. He was the same size as the other two, but he was wild and his shell was taller. He stayed in our pond for a while, but was last seen climbing the 3 foot chain link fence! Wow, turtles can climb fences. Who knew?
